whyIntroduction

Written much later than the synoptic gospels, John delivers his account of the "good news" to persuade people to believe in the Messiah of Israel and to proclaim that He is G-d. To prove this point, John focuses on seven of miraculous signs that Messiah performs to validate His authority and divinity. The book contains Messiah's "I am" statements, His encounters with Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman, and additional details of His last Passover seder with His disciples. The book of John concludes with Messiah and His disciples at the shore of the sea of Tiberius and John observing that there were many other things that Messiah did which, if they were written in detail, even the world itself would not contain the books that would be written.

In the book of John, Messiah makes seven "I AM" statements:

  • I AM the bread of life (John 6:35,48)
  • I AM the light of the world (John 8:12, 9:5)
  • I AM the gate (John 10:7)
  • I AM the good shepherd (John 10:11,14)
  • I AM the resurrection and the life (John 11:25)
  • I AM the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6)
  • I AM the true vine(John 15:1,5)
